This Saturday, August 6, 2005 marks the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Voter Rights Act. Atlanta will be in the limelight as people gather from across the country for the Keep the Vote Alive rally and march The Voter Rights Act is up for renewal in 2007 and there are indications that the radical right may try to block that renewal. Even with the Voter Rights Act, there are many examples of voting restrictions due to race, language or redistricting.
Saturday's march and rally, sponsored by the Rainbow Push Coalition will feature Congressman John Lewis, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, Willie Nelson, Randi Rhodes and many others. I'll be marching with Georgia for Democracy - if you're going to be in Atlanta Saturday look us up - we'll be wearing bright red "You Have the Power" T-shirts! Full details and schedule here.
